Sweet Adeline

The thing that makes Parisian girls so intimidating to me is the way they seamlessly mix tough with elegant—Balenciaga ankle boots with a floaty floral dress; their boyfriend's oversized black cashmere sweater with a prim Hermes scarf; loads and loads of black eyeliner with a delightfully understated nude pout. And it's not just them; loads of American girls are going all kinds of Paris, too. Think Lauren Conrad hiking up her couture to ride around the City of Lights on Matthias's motorcycle, or the Olsens's look when they roll out of bed most mornings. But for those who can't DIY, Parisian-born, London-raised emerging accessories designer Adeline Cacheux, embodies this rock 'n roll chic in "Charles," her most recent collection of chains, earrings, rings and bracelets available in both sterling silver and vermeil. From sensual but simple long chains to more complicated knotted numbers to necklaces that playfully mix soft and hard metals, these accessories are the kind of thing you mindlessly toss on to instantly make yourself look pulled together—or bring an uptown ensemble back downtown where it belongs. If it's sparkle you're after, look to a silver bracelet that toys with textures or a chunky ring that gets its visual weight from a complicated mess of chains. For fashionistas with a more delicate sensibility, her head jewel provides some subtle hair bling in the classic manner of a Sabrina Fairchild—not van der Woodsen.

"I like the timeless aspect of a jewel so I try to design accessories that are specific and recognizable and can be worn night and day in many different ways with lots of different styles," Cacheux coos. "I like a jewel to be versatile." That's funny, so do we.
Oh, Inverted World

When I hopped on the phone with emerging artist Matt Furie to talk about his upcoming show of new work with Albert Reyes at Giant Robot, I was a little nervous. The hyper colorful pieces on his Web site—often small-scale love notes to '80s icons—appear to be the work of someone who is smart, funny and cool...kind of like J.D. from "Heathers." Would he think that my question about Falcor was silly? Or wonder how much I really know Pee-Wee's Playhouse? It turned out I had nothing to fear from this triple threat. Chatting with Furie makes time fly. It ... When I ask whether he would rather spend the rest of his life in "The Neverending Story" or The Muppet Show, I know he gets it, and doesn't think I'm nuts. "Definitely 'The Neverending Story,'" he says without missing a beat. "Although, in a way I feel like I already do live in it...it's a movie all about fighting against loss of imagination and recognizing the importance of return to a land of fantasy. That's kind of what I try to do everyday in my work." Why does he choose to do small drawings instead of going big with his creepy creatures? "I went to a liberal arts college in Ohio, and a professor there once told me that it doesn't matter what size your art is," Furie explains. "A piece that's the size of a ring can have just as much of an impact as a mural. I used to only do three by three inch drawings using markers or colored pencils, but now I also draw stuff that's eight by ten and eleven by fourteen. I try not to get too caught up in the details, but it's a delicate balance. When I was in school I'd always rush on leaves on trees or fur on animals, and it turns out that there are no shortcuts."

Forget about the fur. I had to ask, what's the deal with all those Ray Ban-rocking animals in his work? "When I was little, I would alway put sunglasses and a backwards hat on my dog and take pictures of him—he was this awesome mutt named Duffy. There's just something hilarious about an animal wearing sunglasses." Oddly enough, after checking out his work and spending half an hour on the phone with this pop culture prince, I have to agree.

The opening reception for "Killing Time" will be held this Saturday from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at Giant Robot, 2062 Sawtelle Boulevard, (310) 445-9276.

- Caroline Stanley

Trapper Keepers

A funny thing happened when I was poking around the fashion department last week. I spotted a clothing rack with some cool pieces from one of our Styles 2008 menswear finalists, Stewart Randolph, and decided to do a little digging on this emerging designer. It turns out this School of Music student at the nearby University of Michigan isn't just skilled at making outdoors-inspired downtown duds for guys—think trapper hats and loads of plaid—he's also got a few polished but casual urban options for girls available through his Etsy store. And to think, it all started with a noble quest to find some cool jeans. Dissatisfied with the offerings for fashionable dudes, this former SoCal native signed up for an introductory sewing class and set about making his own denim instead. Unique washes and details like graphics on the pockets and belt loops and colorful stitching gave each pair a signature feel—and as it turns out, Randolph was just getting started.

Which brings me to his exciting debut collections for Fall 2008 (see them in his animated short, "The Sewing Machine"), which are meant to invoke a caricature of a macho masculine ideal. Aside from his carefully-crafted jeans and pants, standouts for fellas include Randolph's rugged Green Wool Felt Jacket and the lumberjack chic Red Plaid Hunter Jacket. For the girls, I've got my eye on his eye catching Mustard Pea Coat and the toss 'n go <a href="http://stewartrandolph.com/Site/WOMENS.html#10" target="_blank"Navy Banded Dress—both sporty pieces also happen to be on sale, so lucky for me, I won't have to choose. "I would say my ideal customer is someone who approaches fashion from an artistic and easygoing viewpoint," he explains. "Ideally, my clothes should express my customer's personality without overshadowing it."

For more information please visit www.stewartrandolph.com.

- Caroline Stanley

Hot Hot Heels

The pop culture powers-that-be have always stoked the rivalry between blonde and brunette: think Kelly and Brenda, Zach and Slater, Blair and Serena. But Gen Art Styles 2008 accessories nominee Bionda Castana, which translates from Italian to "blonde" and "brunette", has proven that these two opposites can come together to create a pretty fabulous pair. The blonde and brunette in question are Natalia Barbieri and Jennifer Portman, college friends who ditched their nine-to-fives in a quest to create the perfect shoe. Frustrated by the ludicrous prices of luxury footwear, Barbieri and Portman decided to create the pieces they wanted for themselves, despite the fact that neither one had any design training. And what they wanted just happens to be what every girl wants: timeless romance, indulgence, solid craftsmanship and value for money.

After a brief shoe making tutorial in Milan, Bionda Castana was born, dripping with Italy's signature glamor, handcrafted spirit and reverence of luxury. Each pair emits a distinctly Old Hollywood nostalgia, from the Swarovski crystal clusters gracing a peep-toe to the nosebleed-inducing four-inch heels that come as a standard (a three-inch version has recently been introduced for the acrophobic). These are shoes for the uptown socialite who harbors downtown club kid fantasies, blending delicately sculptural design with bold pops of color, sumptuous silks and exotic skins—all of which can be customized to suit a buyer's tastes.

"We try to combine both red carpet and daytime styles that will look right with any outfit," says Barbieri. "Our inspirations are endless—anything from Alexander McQueen to the way a door handle or key ring is shaped."

If Blair and Serena decided to ditch the Upper East Side drama, drop the boys and find new ones with dreamy accents and Vespas, they'd look a lot more legit doing it in a pair of Bionda Castanas—we're addicted already.

For more information please visit www.biondacastana.com.

- Erin Magner

They're Having a Laugh

There's never been a better time to be a whip smart, cheeky ingenue—with big screen heroines like Juno MacGuff dominating the cultural conversation, saucy musicians like Kate Nash charming fans with insouciant lyrics and celluloid queens like Tina Fey proving that yes, women can be funny, it seems like things have suddenly changed. The girls of today don't just wanna have fun; they want to poke a little fun at you while they're doing it. Kind of like the three Aussie expats behind ANT!PODiUM, a delightfully unconventional London-based line that is at times subversive and silly, but always unaffected and ... Case in point, the hilariously catchy names of their collections: "Frilled to Meet You!," "No Romance Without Finance," and the latest installment, "Don't Mind If I Do." But don't go assuming these emerging talents are all talk and no game. Their offbeat offerings for spring—a rather tongue-in-chic take on classic American sportswear—are sure to be hit among the Wicker Park set. But that doesn't mean you Old Town types can't try these pieces out, too.

For a breezy afternoon on Lake Michigan, slip into their Vile Body striped romper and you're sure to float someone's boat.
High Falutin' Society

With a proper sounding name like Julianna Bass, you'd expect nothing less than buttoned up, ladies-who-lunch-only frocks from this emerging eveningwear designer. But you'd be completely wrong. While her eye-catching dresses do have a little old school flare, extremely modern silhouettes and a love of all things scene stealing and dramatic ensure that this former Tennessee gal's pieces are more crab salad at Boulevard than lobster at the Ritz. Fancy, for sure, lucky for us much more playful than pretentious. "Eveningwear is about attitude," she explains. "A humble nature with a raw edge inspires me every time." And there's something for every girl in her upcoming debut collection for fall, which we're over the moon to be featuring at Styles 2008 in New York. The show stopping "Samantha" is a daring black number that dips suggestively low in the rear—offset by an over-sized bow to keep things perfectly ladylike, natch. Speaking of ladylike, you'll look positively demure when you don the flouncy "Peggy," a full-skirted vintage-inspired number that's toughened up thanks to the addition of a chunky jeweled applique at the chest. If you're aiming for a look that's decidedly downtown, the names "Ruth" or "Breanne" should be on the tip of your tongue. One is an avant garde take on a classic LBD; the other, a flirty empire-waisted bubble dress in a rich jacquard.

With the summer season upon us, and a slew of invites to weddings, gala events and swanky cocktail parties hijacking your calender, the least you can do to maintain your sanity is take that whole "what to wear" problem out of the equation. And for that, my pets, there's only one name you really need in your little BlackBerry: Julianna Bass.

For more information please visit www.juliannabass.com.

- Caroline Stanley

Be Mine

A beautiful thing happened the day Melanie Willhide moved in next to Betsey Kenyon, and we would like to personally thank the jewelry gods for the divine accessories intervention that occurred. In an area bursting with roughly 17 million people, a neighbors-turned-besties relationship can be next to impossible, but these SoCal style mavens soon realized their connection was deeper than proximity. And so with equally artistic backgrounds and similar creative aspirations, they established L.B. Valentine, a unique new line of ultra-glam lockets. The idea sprung from a fruitless "locket mission" Kenyon embarked upon after the birth of her daughter. Realizing the lack of fashionable keepsakes in the market, the ladies of Les Blondes launched the collection in hopes of helping other women experiencing the same shopping frustration.

The ladies craft all lockets by hand using materials like rose gold, yellow gold, and sterling silver, with accents of sapphires, rubies, and amethysts among other stones. They're even expanding their line to include both cuff link lockets and pocket lockets for extra photo-toting options. While they could have stopped with functional and trendy, Willhide and Kenyon added the kicker—affectionate meanings associated with different styles. The eight variations include "Sweetie Pie," "Forget Me Knot," and "My Dearest," all of which can't help but pull a few heartstrings.

And for the fashionista looking for something a little more quirky than your typical trinket—you'll heart a saucy squirrel that shoots "Love" out its ruby eye. Freaking adorable.

L.B. Valentine is available at Roseark, 8533 Sunset Boulevard, (310) 659-8857.

- Susan Waits

Can't Live Without 'Em

A monochromatic palette of geometric patterns with the occasional splash of dusky pink might not scream Miami nightlife to you, but that's just because you haven't experienced LIFEwithBIRD yet. The Spring/Summer 2008 collection from this emerging womenswear label, entitled "White Light" is like the perfect rock 'n roll ditty—sugary sweet with a hint of a dark side lurking beneath the surface. Not that I'd expect anything less from a duo that includes Bridget McCall (sister of famed Aussie designer, Alice McCall), a stylist and photographer who honed her sartorial chops working for cool British magazines like i-D and The Face. So what's the inspiration behind all of these slouchy, effortlessly cool pieces that I'm crowing about? Well light, obviously, but in particular the interplay between light and shade in an overarching examination that ends in complete (and totally sexy!) darkness. The limited use of color only furthers the collection's fresh and clean aesthetic, while details like ladylike pleats and the occasional hint of metallic shine or sequin sparkle help the superfine silk jersey knits maintain a subtle edge.

Sure, standing in line outside of a club is never fun, but take it from me—you'll have much better odds of slipping past the gatekeeper at your favorite hip haunt of the moment if you're wearing one of these flattering designs...or at least look a lot cooler while doing it!

For more information please visit www.lifewithbird.com.

- Caroline Stanley

If the Shoe Fits, Grab It

Growing up, Tiffany Tuttle spent her days perfecting her arabesques, pirouettes, and plies at the Nevada Ballet Theatre in Las Vegas, dancing several grueling hours at a time. Though ballet was her central focus, her heartstrings were pulling her in other directions and eventually led her to Princeton, where she graduated with a degree in European History. It was there that she caught the fashion bug: after studying fashion design at F.I.T., she trained under Givenchy and Rebecca Taylor. Realizing shoe design was her true calling, she moved to Milan to study the craft full-time at Ars Sutoria. Yeah—sometimes the path to realization is roundabout.

But Tuttle's classical ballet background remained a constant throughout. Always fascinated by the lines of the foot, the arches of the heel; the former ballerina channeled her knack for the art of dance into the art of the shoe. LD Tuttle was launched in 2005 with her husband Richard Lipinsky, who co-designs the collection, out of their Los Angeles stomping grounds. But each season, the duo flies back and forth from their home to northern Italy where the shoes are meticulously made. With an eye (er, four eyes) for edginess, but also a commitment to wearability, Team LD Tuttle turns out shoes that are architectural, structured, and strong, but still feminine.

Sexy cut-out detailing dominates the impeccable spring collection. If long, strong ballerina legs are what you're after, "The Ringleader," with its 4 and a half inch stacked heel, will deliver. Black patent leather webs decorate "The Exhibitionist Cage Sandal," a provocative pair that's polished and en pointe. "The Suit", a smart pair of lace-up, open-toed oxfords, will please the high-minded, while "The Pacifist," a flatter version, is perfect for a ballerina off-duty—easily the best casual sandal we've seen all spring.

And Tuttle's upcoming fall collection is equally swoon-inducing: don't miss it at our Styles 2008 Fashion & Awards Show!

For more information please visit www.ldtuttle.com.

-Kristi Garced

Clothes Make the Man

Oh, menswear—'tis a complicated thing. Fashion on a man is best when it's subtle, but still unique; thrown on with a semblance of carelessness, but still well thought out. Mastering the balance between unstudied and polished is tricky, but totally attainable with the right stuff. And so we welcome the nascent menswear label, Hyden Yoo, which, with its nouveau take on impeccably tailored classics, makes men look effortlessly dapper with an edge. Yoo initially started designing to update and extend the workplace wardrobe—he crafted shirts that were slim-fitting and of shorter length than usual, allowing men to wear them tucked in to work and then un-tucked for happy hour—without looking sloppy. Three years later, his eponymous collection has evolved into a full-fledged line of suits, coats, and sweaters, all with a self-described "Wall Street meets Brooklyn hipster" high-meets-low aesthetic that's swept New York in recent years. (Thank Taavo Somer.) "With menswear," he explains, "it's hard to reinvent the wheel and try to get men to buy those far out pieces." While still appealing to the everyday businessman, Yoo's traditional silhouettes get a modern update with the addition of subtle, edgy details like leather piping, convertible cuffs and slimming darts. These little touches make his collection appropriate for both work and play, while also appealing to a broader market: "It's not too stuffy where the Brooklyn kids can't wear it."

And because I saw them up close at Oak's recently opened showroom, I can testify: Cashmere-wool blended cardigan sweaters are so buttery soft, you won't be able to stop touching your handsome devil of a boyfriend. Although, at such accessible price points, it wouldn't hurt to buy one for yourself, too...but then, would you expect anything less from the man who sucked milk from a goat's teat on national TV?

For more information visit www.hydenyoo.com; see his pieces in person later this month at our Styles 2008 Fashion & Awards Show!

- Kristi Garced

Feel Me Flow

Drum roll, please. We're sending you uptown. Way uptown. The climate's changing, the Democratic nomination is still up in the air and everyone's allergies are at an all-time high. It seems like a good moment to get away. If you can't catch a real vacation, take an afternoon and check out "Flow," the Studio Museum Harlem's group show of emerging African artists. The diverse perspectives, and mash-up of varied ... A standout among the roster is Mustafa Maluka, an artist originally from Cape Town, who currently works and lives in Berlin. His four oversized portraits of anonymous "invented heroes" feature subjects assembled from contemporary fashion magazines and remembered Western pop culture references from his youth in Cape Flats, an apartheid-designated area of Cape Town. Flow's literature notes the paintings' suggestion of passport photographs, but I think their assorted origins and vibrant, colorist tendencies make them seem more like gigantic postage stamps. Rather than indicating any specific homeland, these stylized pictures are tickets to anywhere.

Including the top of the Billboard charts, apparently. Though his subjects may be invented and nameless, the icon-like stature he grants them on canvas is a sure nod to the status we confer on globally-popular musicians.
Hello Doily

You'd think that an emerging accessories designer who grew up in Kyoto, surrounded by tea houses, geisha girls and temples—not to mention piles of silk patterns courtesy of her family's generations old kimono business—would create pieces that were very clearly influenced by traditional Asian culture. Not so with Saya Hibino, a finalist in our Styles 2008 competition whose one-of-a-kind work, made using wax molds of antique lace, is anything but predictable. Want to turn heads with a luxe statement piece that's totally original? Go regal, and grab one of her 18-karat gold rings that's shaped in the manner of an ornate crown. Feeling more delicate flower than warrior woman? The intricate lines of her ethereal peacock ring will wrap your finger in an exquisite gilded cocoon. Looking for an investment piece that will take your look straight from day to evening? The more solid cuff bracelet is equal parts Jane Austen heroine and Wonder Woman— which sounds rather ideal, doesn't it?

A jewelry collection that hints at the elegance of days of yore—perhaps we can see the evidence of Hibino's rarefied childhood in these pretty pieces after all!

Saya Hibino is available at Riley James, 3027 Fillmore Street, (415) 775-7956.

- Caroline Stanley

Rocks Your World

Some people bring a camera with them everywhere when they go on vacation. Others mark their experiences by keeping some sort of travel journal. Personally, I like to find a special article of clothing at a tucked away boutique or in a flea market—something that sums up my journey and that I know I won't be able to find anywhere else. Emerging accessories designer Matina Sujhahuta (who has previously created one-of-kind pieces for Aussie cult label, Sretsis) takes my approach one step farther with "Globetrotters," her charming new collection of cocktail rings inspired by the architecture of some of the ... "I've got ideas from traveling around the world," this Central Saint Martins/Parsons School of Design alumni explains. "I've noticed how traditions and cultures shape each city and make them unique. But it was only recently that I noticed how a certain architecture tells a beautiful tale of the city it resides. The rings encapsulate the buildings and the feelings, reminding me what memories and dreams were made during my visits."

With the current economy crisis, a practical fashion maven has got to make cuts everywhere she can.
