Jersey Girls

Fall into these colorful, kaleidoscopic pieces for the summer months ahead.

To say we're psyched to stow away our heavy coats, black tights, and all other superfluous wintry layers would be an understatement. We've never been more ready to toss out our skinnies and throw on our minis, but this weather is playing games with our heart. A fresh new crop of casual spring dresses from emerging designer and Styles 2008 eveningwear finalist Margarita Saplala is making the anticipation that much more difficult—but for these, it's worth the wait.

After graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Saplala got her start designing at Halston Coats and then started her own t-shirt line in 2005 out of her East Village apartment. Her eponymous line, now based in Brooklyn, has since expanded into full line of ready-to-wear, but she's always remained faithful to her casual roots: to create pieces that are sleek and sophisticated, but above all easy to wear.

Which explains why she's been called the champion of the everyday. Her collection of warm-weather dresses and tops for Spring 2008 have a relaxed, easy feel, but because of their playful shapes and eccentric prints are not limited as such; slip one on while you grocery shop and wear it to a rooftop party later that night without missing a beat. Saplala's beloved material of choice, by the way, is that soft, stretchy, everyday fabric blend we've come to know as "jersey," and never has it been elevated to such chic heights. Thank God, because last spring's Ella Moss dresses were just starting to get ratty.

Playful, easy and sultry, Saplala's debut is summer summarized. Here's to crazy nights and lazy days in lovely little dresses.
