Shake It Don't Break It

Sweat away your Cinco De Mayo induced hangovers with a cheesy dance party.

Brooklyn-based band Chin Chin describes their sound as a collision of disco beats, Latin rhythms, soul-jazz grooves and funk. In other words, when you hit the release party for their debut self-titled album at Union Pool tomorrow night, you need to be wearing your best dancing shoes—things can get pretty wild when their 10-person-plus entourage hits the stage. In honor of the booty shakin' that's about to go down in the 'burg, we're giving away a pair of tix to this hot-as-McCarren-Pool-in August show. Email us your name and your favorite party album for a chance to win, and read on for our interview with the local trio.

Gen Art Pulse: Your Web site is pretty fun and weird and explosive. So is your music. Is it ever hard to keep up the energy?
Chin Chin: Thanks! We love weird explosions. It feels pretty natural in a completely virtual, digital, binary-codes-ish sort of way. We have a good system for keeping energy up. There's a mandatory three day sugar, bee pollen and Fun Dip binge before any gig or rehearsals.

GAP: If you had to compare your sound to a sandwich, what would it be?
CC: You really stumped us on this one. We've been googling for hours and we can't figure out the right answer. If we don't get at least a B+ on this questionnaire, it's gonna totally screw our GPA! We don't know exactly what kind of sandwich it is but we do know it has French fries in it. Not on the side, but in between the bread or on top, if it's an open-faced sandwich.

GAP: If you had to pick one musician from the '70s to travel through time and join your band, who would it be?
CC: Is Mick Jagger in his 70's yet? He was awesome in "Freejack"!

GAP: Some people are shy about dancing. Any advice for them?
CC: You put your left foot in and you take your left foot out. We can never remember what happens next...

GAP: Summer is almost here, which means outdoor BBQs. Best album to play during an afternoon party?
CC: De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising

Chin Chin's album release party will take place at Union Pool, 484 Union Avenue, (718) 609-0484; tickets are $10 at the door.
