We Call Dibs
A new line of pieces so effortlessly cool that sharing is simply out of the question.
Katherine Pont, a Sydney-born and London-based fine artist, got her start in fashion with drawing illustrations for a friend's t-shirt line. Seeing clothing as "a new canvas," Pont decided to apply her trompe l'oeil style to her own line of womenswear, MINE. The result is a sweet and clever collection of separates with an artist's touch.
Hand-drawn illustrations embroidered onto cotton tops and dresses and paper doll cut-outs in skirts and jumpers are paired with simple tailored shirts, cropped jackets and sailor shorts for a look that is cool and subtly sexy. Pont enjoys playing with the idea of nostalgia in her work and MINE's Spring 2008 collection most certainly evokes a familiarity. Like a story you've heard recounted so many times you begin to think it's your own, MINE is light-hearted and the strength is in the details.
As most single working girls in the city, I am on the never-ending quest to look cute and unique on a budget. Pont creates simple accessories to complement each collection; for spring, the line includes hearts and bows cut from jersey and strung on silver chains. Her intricate pen and ink watches, oxford-style shoelaces and Twiggy eyelashes drawn directly on the skin (see model) are as fun and whimsical as the clothes. Shoes are a must for all New Yorkers but I can't wait to start batting my cartoon lashes and telling time on my fake watch.
Get thee to Only Hearts to buy the collection and an art supply store for DIY accessoriesand keep an eye on this one. A sneak peek at her charming new pieces for Fall 2008 prove without a doubt that she's an emerging designer to watch!
