Now Mary
Ladylike pieces from a former Oakland girl will make you feel anything but contrary.
I first discovered Brooklyn-based emerging designer Mary Meyer after a friend invited me to a "dress-up party" at her studio. Imagine my glee when I walked in to find a room full of happy hipsters, sipping wine while eagerly pawing through boxes of printed tunics and fun, tie-dyed frocks. Suddenly your typical sample sale seemed totally cold and impersonal. Not to mention uncool.
A painting major at the California College of the Arts, Meyer realized she was destined for a career in design when customers at the Bay Area-restaurant where she worked started clamoring for her homemade ensembles. After swapping careers (and coasts!), Meyer decided to launch her own line of carefree, casual womenswear in 2005, with an emphasis on modern cuts and hand-dyed prints. Socially-aware types take note: Everything is made locally, and the line is 100 percent sweatshop-free. While you can't sip Pinot Grigio in her digs, you can shop this transplant's adorable yet affordable Spring/Summer 2008 collection.
The "Snake Dance Biggie," a simply oversized black tunic, gets an interesting twist thanks to the addition of a tribal-style print. A well-cut pair of high waisted long shorts embody the idea of easy summer dressing; pair them with a tank, layered necklaces and some platform sandals, and you'll feel comfortable while looking effortlessly chic. My favorite piecethe strawberry pink and white striped bloomersare a charming blend of sweet and sexy. Toss 'em on with a tee and run around barefoot in some freshly mowed grass in Dolores Parkor just feel like thanks to Mary, yes, you may.
