Made For the Dark
An electro-pop duo from the U.K. will make even the most stubborn wallflower dance.
You know those nights when you've made plans to go out, but by the time you get home from work, you're completely exhausted? In the past, I've tried everything to help myself perk up in those situations: power naps, trips to the gym, copious amounts of Diet Coke. And then I bought a copy of Made In the Dark, the third album from London-based electro-poppers Hot Chip. It's like Red Bull for the soul.
So how did this fabulous fivesome get their start? Dissatisfied with the state of pop music, they came together to create a sound that was inspired by their heroespeople like Phil Spector, The Beach Boys, Kraftwerk, Timbaland and Aphex Twin. "Most of it is just rubbish isn't it," vocalist Joe Goddard has said of music today. "Overall I think it's pretty much how it has been for the last five years or something. There are these wonderful little gems amongst a sea of nasty, horrible turds. Horribly diseased. In fact some of them now aren't even turdsthey're just gray little pebbles. So boring."
Tell us how you really feel, Joe.
Click here to watch the totally weird technicolor video for the third track on the new album, the first single, "Ready For the Floor," and then mark your calendars for the 17th, when they'll be playing at the Vic Theatre with special guest Free Blood, an experimental band from Brooklyn. If you're anything like me, you're going to want to listen to these rump shakin' sounds over and over... which is a lot more cost effective than all those energy drinks!
The Vic Theatre is located at 3145 North Sheffield Avenue, (773) 472-0366; grab your tickets here.
