Ask Pulse: Rainbow-Colored Jeans

Nothing says "I'm with the band" like colorful, '80s-inspired denim... when it's done the right way.

Dear Pulse,

It seems like the electric-colored jeans fad from last spring isn't going anywhere. After a lot of soul searching, I feel like I'm finally ready to jump on board the trend wagon. That said, I don't want to look like a moron, or even worse, a fashion victim. Any advice for a hipster wannabe?

First off, I want to tell you that I used to feel that same fear and apprehension. Then I came across a feature on Hilary Duff in the latest issue of Lucky magazine where she mentioned that she was crazy about these red skinny jeans from a new premium denim line out of Canada, Small Town. And I couldn't get those cherry-colored suckers out of my mind—kind of like the pop tart's sugary single, "Come Clean", from a few years back.

But embracing this trend isn't foolproof. Here are three rules that you need to remember when rocking candy-hued denim:

1. Pair your jeans with something neutral on top and keep other bright colors in your ensemble to a minimum. This includes your shoes.

2. Cut and fit is really crucial—they should be slim fit with a straight leg, lest you look like a Kid 'n Play groupie.

3. Consider ditching all other accessories. It's easy to look too busy (or like you're trying to hard) when you're wearing electric blue or canary yellow on bottom.

And if you're not down with Small Town like the Duff is, other brands to check out for their colorful creations this season include Rich & Skinny, Marc by Marc Jacobs and 4 Stroke Jeans. Good luck in your quest—just think, if you can conquer this, you might now be ready to face the granddaddy of all springtime denim dilemmas... white jeans!
