She Completes Me
a rising star down under makes a debut heard 'round the world
'Tis the season to be sartorially conflicted. Transitional spring-but-still-wintery weather, stores chock full of summery stuff, and last year's moth-ridden spring clothes strewn pell-mell on my floor; in these uncertain times, all I want is something lovely I can toss on and feel good in. And lo!enter Melbourne designer Yeojin Bae, with a spring collection that is everything I want to wear, exactly.
Known for her whimsy, feminine and impeccably tailored aesthetic, Bae's current collection couldn't be more perfect for spring: a time of rebirth, renewal and the return of pretty dresses. Bae, by the by, has got quite the resume. After graduating from the Whitehouse Institute of Design in Sydney, she excelled as an intern for Marc Jacobs and Anna Sui (funny, because her pieces are oft a cross betwixt the two), then applied her prowess as head designer for both Saba and Charlie Brown. On the heels of her eponymous solo debut, she won the prestigious Tiffany and Co. Designer of the Year Award, made a capsule collection for Target in Australia and caught the eye (making the racks, natch) of Barneys and Harvey Nichols, among others. Whew!
And with one look at her collection, it's not hard to see why Bae is set for international stardom. Bold hues of magentas and royal blues, beautiful silks and meticulous detailing distinguish every piece here. Bae favors individuation and isn't afraid to traipse the globe for it, scooping up vintage prints from European dealers and visiting markets in Budapest, Marrakech and Asia for one-of-a-kind beads, trims and other such charms that define her work. Her delightful duds will take you straight from work to the party; under a jacket on a chilly morning or worn alone later that nighttransitional in the best way possible.
