Go West!

A Portland designer's feminine frocks make our must-have list for spring!

Believe it or not, one of my favorite lines for spring wasn't born in the hustle and bustle of New York's design district. And it isn't the product of an emerging designer out of L.A. Rachel Mara is the Portland-based baby of Rachel Gorenstein, a Canadian-born designer who has made a name for herself since 2001 by putting her unique twist on classic American sportswear—think Calvin Klein after a few cocktails. Pretty impressive stuff for a gal who started out with a career in advertising.

"Sisters", her new collection for Spring/Summer 2008 provides a sexy mix of eye-popping prints in body-conscious silhouettes, placing a heavy emphasis on the clever little details. A slinky silk blouse in an orange floral pattern looks positively polished when paired with black high-waisted pants. A gray and orange halter romper in a playful geometric print will show just the right amount of sun-kissed skin. White piping and cute buckles at the wrists lend a tailored jacket in navy a crisp, sophisticated feel, and ensure it will become a staple. Suddenly, updating your wardrobe for spring just got a whole lot easier.

If there's one thing we all know about sisters, it's that they love to raid each other's closets—especially if they are well stocked. But be warned: Grab one of these striking pieces and she won't be the only one you have to look out for!
