Everyday Costumes

A Swedish denim darling rocks out with a more upscale line of edgy duds.

By now, if you're worth your weight in beat up Converse, you know about Cheap Monday, the Stockholm-based brand that made a name amongst hipsters with their tight, affordable denim that's emblazoned with a characteristic skull logo. Exciting stuff? Sure. But what has everyone at Gen Art even more hot and bothered is Kostym by Cheap Monday, their new line which puts a more polished spin on the original rocker chic aesthetic. In other words, it's more dinner at Diner than bender at Trash Bar.

The unisex looks in their Spring/Summer 2008 debut vary in silhouette but have a distinctly masculine bent. A multi-check oversized shirt with rolled up sleeves would look just as cute on your skinny jeans-loving boyfriend as it would on you, worn as a dress. A tailored, body-conscious pencil skirt gets a quirky, indie girl makeover courtesy of some well-placed straps. A basic belted trench in black cotton is equal parts "Breakfast At Tiffany's" and "Say Anything"—fortunately, at this reasonable price point you can avoid a relationship-ending brawl with your bf and just nab him one, too.

And I didn't even tell you about the amazing selection of carefully-tailored pants and denim. Kostym: Proof that just because you want to look a little more grown up doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your effortlessly cool factor.

Kostym by Cheap Monday is available at Alter, 109 Franklin Street, (718) 784-8818.
