Where's the De Lorean, Doc?
Time warp with clothier Gilded Age to get fresh threads made from antique machinery.
If you're an old soul, looking for quality in your wares, the Forever 21 state of fashion might not be your cup of tea. If urban sprawl, mass consumption and polyester blends make you cringe, find solace in the clothes of Gilded Age. The emerging line utilizes industrial machinery and old methods of construction, embracing high standards of craftsmanship to create pieces that look weathered and imperfect. In other words, they're bringing 1900 back. And it's pretty freaking hot.
Cozy sweaters are hand knitted by artisans using Mongolian cashmere yarns, and come in a variety of gauges. Denim is made using vintage looms and dyed with the natural color of the indigo plant. Jersey knits are softer thanks to 19th century machines that operate more slowly than their modern day counterparts. Colors are richer across the board courtesy of the unique production processes and the use of really old dyes. Suddenly, we're feeling a little over that whole mass production thing.
Their current offerings include utilitarian looks for both sexes, but really, is a brand made for guys. The gold star of the winter collection goes to the Tamanny Wool Melton Coat for men. Rustic plaid meets turn of the 19th century military wool in an ideal crossover piece from weekends at the lake house to weekdays in the city. When embracing the lumberjack chic look, we think it's best to go authenticgo Gilded.
Gilded Age is available at Guise, 2217 North Halsted, (773) 929-6101, or through their online store.
