No Jerks Allowed!

Geek out when the funniest man in electronic music brings his one-man party to the El Rey.

Maybe part of the reason I love Dan Deacon is that his name is alliterative. Or maybe it's the fact that this Baltimore-based, self-proclaimed "absurdist composer and electronic musician," takes that whole geek chic thing that has become so popular in recent years to soaring new heights. Think Seth Cohen on acid.

The resulting sound (much of it courtesy of a Casio keyboard) has been called everything from "demented circus music" to "warped polka." The truth? This lap-top wizard creates inhuman songs that dredge up childhood memories of Muppets and the like, and make people dance—sometimes against their better judgment.

"I think something can still be humorous while still being intelligent," he has said. "I was always into music not being too serious. My music strives to take contemporary experimental composition and electronic music out of the circle of the esoteric intellectual gangs and hipster communities, placing it into the more informal 'fun time.'" Fun time you won't want to miss out on when Deacon plays the El Rey Theatre on the 15th. (He tends to dance along, too, which makes his live performances kind of priceless.)

Click here to listen to a few of the tracks from his latest album, Spiderman of the Rings, and then grab your tickets for the show!
