Don't Fear the Reaper

Four modern day Kerouacs go on the road to inspire us all to carpe diem.

What do you want to do before you die? Ride a bike in your birthday suit down the side of the Matterhorn? Do the hokey-pokey with the Pope? Make a bigger-than-life sized paper machete bust of Rush Limbaugh and blow it up in Giant Stadium in front of an audience of thousands?

The guys from The Buried Life posed this very same query and came up with a list of 100 things they wanted to do before their final curtain. Now, they are roaming the continent in a big purple bus trying to realize their goals, while also hoping to inspire others to create their own lists as well—and documenting the entire process through pictures and videos on their blog.

While Ben, Dave, Jonnie and Duncan may look more like a carefully-created boy band than men on an existential race down the river Styx, these kids are out there grabbing life by the balls and asking it to cough. They rely on luck, faith and the kindness of strangers to help them cross items of a list that includes: "79. Dance with Ellen," "85. Record a track with Jay-Z" and "15. Get on the cover of Rolling Stone"—which led to a meeting with Jan Wenner who told them, "Get the #*@ out of my office and go bug Lorne Michaels!"

Whether they achieve their goals before they croak isn't the point; they're giving it a shot and filming it to boot for a documentary which they hope to release in 2008, and we're definitely rooting for them. If you want to get involved and share what you want to do before you stop sucking wind with the world, join the Buried Life's network here.
