Rock Out in Arkansas
We've got big love for Little Rock. The leaves are changing, the catfish are frying, and the Arkansas River is calling your name!
If the current political moment and pre-2008-election hype has you hankering to head back to simpler days, perhaps a fall-trip to Little Rock, Arkansas is the ticket. The hometown of America's sweetheart, President Bill Clinton, and capital of "The Natural State", Little Rock is laced with winding rivers, loaded with historic Victorian houses and dotted with organic cafés, art-bars and steal-happy vintage markets. Here, your Pulse guide for how to do it up down South.
Stay: Embrace old school cool at The Capital Hotel, a newly-remodeled spot that's lined with white columns, outfitted with Frette bath linens and located just steps from the riverfront downtown.
Eat: Fried catfish and hush puppies at The Flying Fish, 511 President Clinton Ave, (501) 375-3474. Pulled pork at the Whole Hog Café, 2516 Cantrell Road, (501) 664-5025. Tart apple and cottage cheese pancakes with Vermont syrup, at the Satellite Coffee Co & Café, Kavanaugh and University Avenue, (501) 663-6336.
See: Pack a picnic, buy a day pass and canoe through the rivers and lakes of Pinnacle Mountain State Park. When you're done, check out the antebellum mansions and vintage markets in the historic Quapaw District, and finish your day playing El Presidente The Clinton Presidential Library, which is home to an exact replica of the Oval Office!
