Cool Down With An Icelandic Getaway

Reykjavik is no longer just Björk's hometown. It's a booming hipster's paradise.

For decades, this little rock in the middle of the ocean was a pit-stop on the way to Europe for savvy travelers. But thanks to Björk and geothermic energy, Reykjavik, Iceland's capital, has become a trendy destination for travelers worldwide. There are a bewildering selection of bars, clubs, restaurants and sleek stores to check out— below, our favorites.

Where to soak:
Iceland runs on water. Literally. Naturally occurring hot springs are used to heat people's homes, and Icelanders like to soak in these mineral rich waters as well. To experience this local treat firsthand, head to the Blue Lagoon. Expect to pay about $30 for your 100 degree dip.

Where to shop:
This city is full of chic stores selling both local and international designer clothing and furnishings. Make sure to stop by the Kisan Concept Store, which sells a range of trendy items from around the world, including local hand knit sweaters from the Farmers Market brand.

Where to eat:
Surrounded by water, Icelandic chefs have a wealth of seafood to choose from. Arguably the best restaurant in the city is a subterranean foodie paradise: The Seafood Cellar. You'll find a menu filled with local delicacies like lobster, cod and salmon, as well as more exotic ingredients like kangaroo, wasabi and blood orange.

Where to drink:
Reykjavik's nightlife is not for early birds; clubs and bars start to fill up after midnight and stay packed until daylight. For the real hipster scene check out Sirkus Bar. Björk filmed her "Triumph of the Heart" music video here, and Jude Law stopped in during a wild bender. Think New York's East Village of old, complete with a DJ spinning Elvis Costello and Christmas light decoré.

What to drink:
No matter where you end up drinking, you should order Reyka Vodka. The brand is the only spirit actually distilled in Iceland and is made with the country's famously pure spring water. (The water travels through lava fields, which naturally filter out impurities.) The distillery is powered by renewable geothermic energy, which makes the vodka environmentally friendly choice to boot!

RANDOM TANGENT:
Iceland's most famous film star? Some say Keiko, the killer whale who starred in the Free Willy movies.
