Family Jewels

Bijoux inspired by the on-screen elegance of Michelangelo Antonioni and Jean-Luc Godard's leading ladies...

Maybe it's because I keep seeing the ads for "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2" or the fact that I'm temporarily sharing my studio apartment with my own little sister. But regardless of the cause, lately I've got sisters on the brain. So when I got an email from Celeste and Satu Greenberg, a pair of sibs and the bauble junkies behind New York City-based jewelry line tuleste market, I was at first intrigued and then completely smitten.

"We grew up in a very small town in Northern California and have always loved to find vintage pieces and make them fresh and new by tweaking or redesigning them in some way," they explain when I ask about the their modern-meets-classic aesthetic. "Whenever we're traveling we like to scope out local thrift and vintage stores...we drove cross-country this past summer and thought the state of Texas had amazing vintage, not to mention the people are super nice and the speed limit is high."

The duo's design process has been a joint adventure as well: "We're very close and have similar style but are still individuals. Whenever you're designing with someone else there are always going to be times when you have different visions and directions, but for us it makes our collection even better to understand a different viewpoint and marry it so that the collection speaks to a broader audience." Which is why their classic, timeless jewelry (a mix of bold and subtle pieces) looks just as good on a teenager as a 60-year-old woman. In other words, consider their work a wise investment for the longterm.

Tuleste Market is available at Intermix, 634 Collins Avenue, (305) 531-5910; for more accessories lines designed by sisters, click here.
