Sweat It Out
All of the entertainment, none of the lonely...
On the odd, eclectic mix of things that we intend to do to better ourselves—which also includes running a half marathon and learning to make a signature dish from scratch—there has always been "sign up for a subscription to Wholphin," a quarterly DVD magazine that was co-founded by one of my favorite writers, McSweeney's Dave Eggers. (BTW: Out of curiosity I looked it up, and wholphins are a real animal hybrid—kind of like the liger of the sea.)
Lucky for me (and you!), last week's Wholphin screening at Sweat Records's Music Movie Mondays was delayed because of a stormy lady named Fay, so you have plenty of time to call your friends and tell them to meet you at 8 p.m. tonight for a little culture. Why am I such a zealot? Among the curated selection of rare films in the latest issue, Wholphin No. 6, you'll find a weird short about dating that stars my number one crush, Michael Cera, a documentary about the hunt for Bigfoot, and an election flick that focuses on a class of third graders in China.
And tonight's shorts offerings, which are equally enjoyable and all over the place, include but are not limited to the following material: Scottish kids singing about the devil, David Byrne rocking out to vintage country music in an abandoned warehouse, and an animated monkey coping with a serious heroin addiction.
In other words, it's the perfect entertainment for limited attention spans...and way better than watching it alone in your living room.
Sweat Records is located at 5505 NE 2nd Avenue, (305) 758-5862.
