Save the Disco Ball...

save the music. Or so says James Murphy.

Not so long ago in a city called New York there was a young boy who was disillusioned by the hypocrisy of the downtown rock scene. So he found a band of kindred spirits who called themselves Dungbeetle, and signed on as their sound mixer. Some time passed and he met an English raver/producer who agreed with him about the sad state of music. After ingesting copious amounts of drugs and dance tracks, the boy started throwing loft parties and DJing. Eventually he joined forces with the raver to form their own music production team and dance-rock record label, DFA Records.

These days LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy is an independent music hero with a new mission: to bring back disco. Which is why he's hitting the road with his equally-obsessed drummer, Pat Mahoney, on a three month-long international DJ tour that will bring them to the Windy City's Smart Bar tonight. (If you can't make the show, check out their much-heralded Fabric Live 36 collaboration for a taste of what they're trying to do.)

"People hear that word 'disco,' and they see bell bottoms and 'That '70s Show,'" Murphy explains. "No, no, no. This is real liberation music for people who know where to go. This is the real deal." Under the moniker Special Disco Version, the duo mixes rare underground disco tracks with some new material creating an indie dance hybrid that's definitely more hipster than hustle. Can you dig?

Special Disco Version plays Smart Bar tonight at 10 p.m.; purchase advance tickets here.
