Guilt-Free Danish

Socially-conscious leather? Meet the closest thing.

The creative talents behind New York-based handbag line Hansengross define luxury as "the ease of movement." Sure that's an elegant way to put it, but when it comes to their products, luxury means so much more. Denmark-born journalist Mikkel Hansen and native designer Alexandra Gross founded a small bag shop in 2006. "Our goal is to provide quality, style, and function—all produced in New York City or Paris," they have said. A mere two years later, the designers are placing their luxe leather pieces in the hands of discerning style junkies worldwide.

What's their secret? Hansengross's bags for men, women, and travel are minimal but highly functional. My personal favorite is an attention grabber from the Fall 2008 collection—a buttery soft, bright tarocco orange clutch. With unexpected details like cashmere or fine cotton lining you'll want to carry one of these bags forever. Luckily, their leather only gets richer with wear and their timeless minimalist design means you may never have to let one go.

And that's a good thing, because in addition to ease of movement, Hansengross bags offer ease of mind. The bag's hardware is locally produced in New York's diamond district and zippers are custom made in Switzerland and Italy so you never have to worry that your bag came courtesy of sweatshop labor.

Gorgeous style and a clear conscience? Now that's real luxury.
