Back in my Tiger Beat days, I developed a penchant for writing fan letters to my favorite pop stars and pinups. Sadly, it was short-lived, ending once I realized the New Kids weren't going to respond with a doorstep serenade and roses. Luckily, artist and designer Alyson Fox has a bit more tenacity, since her foray into fan mail has resulted in a fashion collaboration that puts my faith back in the medium.

"I saw Caitlin Mociun's clothes in a local store in Austin, and instantly loved them," Fox explains. "I felt we had a lot of similarities, so I e-mailed her a bunch of questions, not even expecting a reply. But about a month later, she wrote the sweetest e-mail, we became pen pals, and about four months ago we decided to design a collection together."

That collaboration, Fox in Mociun, is the perfect combination of each designer's simple, yet sweet aesthetic and lovingly hand-drawn prints. Debuting in Spring '09, the collection is comprised of two tees, 2 dresses, a tote and a scarf that were all a joint effort. The images on the t-shirts are the product of a back and forth mailing process between the two friends, while on the dresses it's one of each designer's signature silhouettes graced with the other's illustrations.

In the meantime, Fox is continuing her own art career and her eco-friendly clothing line, A Small Collection (pictured here)—but she admits it's undergone some transformations since teaming up with Mociun. "Now that we have this outlet, I'm not stressing about having a full clothing line of my own and can concentrate more on my art," she says. "I've started focusing on accessories—necklaces that feature my artwork, organic cotton bras and totes and layering tanks. Each piece can work with our collaboration and with other lines."

Thanks to this happy outcome, my faith in fan letters has been renewed—keep an eye on your mailbox, Jordan Knight.
