Baubles from Brooklyn
Jewelry that proves spooky and sexy aren't mutually exclusive.
Designers often work in contradictions—and Meredith Kahn, the creative force behind accessories line Made Her Think, is a perfect example. The FIT grad has a knack for creating unlikely pairings with unexpectedly beautiful results: punk-inspired pyramid studs that come in pretty pastel colors, skull charms dotted with Swarovski crystals, silk chiffon brooches sporting resin spears. They're the ideal accessories for any good girl gone bad...and grown up.
Kahn launched Made Her Think—an anagram of her name—in 2004 from her home base in Brooklyn. After getting her start in the fashion world as a denim designer for Old Navy, her jewelry-making hobby took on a life of its own when both Vogue and Lucky featured her work. Now, less than five years later, MTH is the indie darling of the accessories world, with celebrity devotees that include Angelina Jolie (who is pretty much the poster girl for the brand's sugar-and-spice aesthetic).
Kahn's latest collection for Fall 2008 just might be her opus, full of pieces that exist in a mystery-cloaked world somewhere between "Dark Crystal" and "Blade Runner." Titled "Faux Illumination," the collection perfectly captures Kahn's one-of-a-kind, gloomy charm that's tempered by a touch of club kid whimsy. With Victorian-inspired touches like cameos coexisting with Sid Vicious studs and spikes, the look is come hither...at your own risk. Our favorite item in the bunch? The Talon Ring, which features a Swarovski-encrusted talon that wraps across two fingers. The look is as tough as nails—but at the same time, as feminine as a set of expertly-manicured ones.
Made Her Think is available at Milk, 8209 West 3rd Street, or online at www.shopmht.com. Right now, you'll snag a complimentary cream-colored Candy Pyramid Ring with any $200 order.
