The New Curiosity Shop

Remember the thrill you used to get in Spencer's Gifts?

When I recently received an email from downtown design darlings Love Brigade about today's launch of their limited edition t-shirt in conjunction with The New Museum's freshly-opened exhibit, "After Nature," (it's all about not-so-distant environmental disasters) I had to wonder: Is there some weird art world equivalent to wearing the shirt of the band you're going to see? And if so, would I be able powerless to resist throwing on a Love Brigade tee in their "Through The Trees" print, which is part of the Fall 2008 collection that pays homage to Kurt Cobain's artwork?

As I pondered these deep questions, I explored the New Museum's online store which is home to some pretty random but totally exciting stuff for the artistically inclined. A limited-edition puzzle created out of one of Terry Richardson's iconic clown photographs? Yes, it's really frightening and yes it can really be yours for just 75 clams. Have the inexplicable desire to send someone an extremely funny but slightly upsetting missive? Reach for your BlackBerry and one of the black and white postcards in Glasgow-based artist David Shrigley's "Evil Thoughts" book. For something of the wearable variety, a delicate necklace made from a real Japanese quail egg that's lined with 23 karat gold leaf should do just the trick.

Suddenly find yourself drooling over the myriad possibilities? The Cloud Spill Napkin by Jeff Ladouceur is an aesthetically-pleasing way to guard against such accidents—and you can hang it on your walls when you're done!

The "Through The Trees" t-shirt is available exclusively at The New Museum Store, 235 Bowery; "After Nature" runs through September 21st.
