13 Indie Rock Covers

These songs made us almost as excited as Jack Black singing "Let's Get It On" in "High Fidelity"

A few weeks back a hilarious Entertainment Weekly round-up of the worst song cover of all time sent my mind racing in the opposite direction—so I asked Carrie Schupper, Gen Art's Director of Music Programming to come up with a shortlist of the thirteen of the best indie covers she has come across in recent months (a mixed bag of contemporary songs and oldies but goodies).

Read on, listen up and try not to be too crushed that Cat Power and ScarJo didn't make the cut; one because she's made a career out of crafting good covers, the other because we still can't believe she has an album. And whatever you do, never ever watch this clip of Celine Dion trying to rock out to some AC/DC.

1. Thao Nguyen, "Baby I Love You" (Aretha Franklin)
2. Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, "D.A.N.C.E" (Justice)
3. Santogold, "Guns of Brooklyn" (The Clash)
4. The Black Keys, "Act Nice And Gentle" (The Kinks)
5. Rilo Kiley, "Simply Irresistible" (Robert Palmer)
6. Phosphorescent, "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" (The Righteous Brothers)
7. Rock Plaza Central, "SexyBack" (Justin Timberlake)
8. Colin Meloy, "Oh No" (Lavender Diamond)
9. Kate Nash, "I'm Not Going To Teach Your Boyfriend..." (Black Kids)
10. The Kooks, "Crazy" (Gnarls Barkley)
11. Iron & Wine, "Waitin' For A Superman" (Flaming Lips)
12. Jose Gonzales, "Heartbeats" (The Knife)
13. Tilly and the Wall, "Hey Ya" (Outkast)
