Travelin' Light

Couture for the foot, inspired by a strapless bra.

I'll be the first to admit that when it comes to fashion, I can be a fickle customer. Something I loved one week can suddenly feel tired the next; an item that was once a favorite can end up shoved in the depths of my closet; a piece that I would have fought for in the store can go unworn, tags still intact, for an entire season. I'm not proud of my mercurial ways, but I am happy to say that they helped point me toward the perfect new line of footwear for summer getaways—phootlery.

Consider it the "Choose Your Own Adventure" of sandals. Interchangeable uppers, crafted to be worn as jewelry pieces, attach to an ergonomically-designed sole foundation that is either a flat, wedge, or heel. A wide range of materials—from fabric to precious stones—means that each pair of shoes can run the gamut from casual chic to dressy without taking up precious room in your suitcase—a problem Chris Ann Phelan, the designer behind the line, always experienced: "Flip flops are easy to pack, but design wise, they're too basic. I felt that there was a need for something special."

And for girls sticking closer to home, it means that your toes are set to twinkle whether you're headed to a back patio barbecue or taking in the Chicago River views and a few cocktails at Rebar. If only they made dates who were such style chameleons...

Phootlery is available at Stima Bleu, 1815 St. Johns Avenue, 847-681-9577.
