Imagine If...
Take ordinary to extraordinary and go the extra mile (er...meter!) with a new accessories line.
Based out of Indonesia, emerging womenswear designer Nina Nikicio first became immersed in fashion—literally—as an incredibly imaginative little girl: "I used to trash my mother's closet and play with my grandmother's fabrics—she had a tiny shop in the neighborhood. I would wrap myself in rolls of fabric and pretend that I was a monster from outer space." Sounds lovely, but a little bit odd. Sort of like the handcrafted accessories in Millimeter, her new collaboration project with Ginetta Dadia from Thanks for Nothing.
"Ginetta and I are good friends, and I always knew she had a knack for handcrafted things," Nikicio explains. "She used to make lots of friendship bracelets and tie dyed t-shirts to be sold among our friends. Through this collaboration, I want to help her get exposure for her talent and at the same time apply it in new ways. I guided her along in the process, but in the end, the result still represents her aesthetics as a designer."
While eye-catching obi belts and brightly-colored decorative "hands" might seem like a strange combination, Nikicio has said that she doesn't believe that collections need to be totally cohesive to flow correctly and make complete sense. Creating wearable pieces that are easy to mix and match with what you already have in your wardrobe is more of a priority...even if the end result is a little offbeat. "I want the collection to be personal, a part of a person's everyday life, but we all know that people hide sometimes, and I try to bring them a comfortable place to conceal, take a load off, and dress up," she has said.
Quirky without being flashy or overdone, these unconventional designs bring a welcome dose attitude to the everyday!
