Poppy, Queen of the Lipstick
Poppy King lauched a lipstick empire because she wanted to look as cute as her best friend.
A little over 15 years ago Poppy King, a recent high school graduate, was a girl with a lofty mission: to create, what she deemed, "the most amazing lip products in the world." Alienated by the plethora of pink glosses on the market, she took inspiration instead from the rich, matte reds that dominated the glamorous mouths of the '40s and started Poppy, an eponymous line in 1992. For the next 12 years it was a smashing success that eventually led King to New York, where she joined up with Estee Lauder.
But like any true hero on a quest, she couldn't get that original lippy obsession out of her mind: "I tried talking myself out of making a serious career out of lipstick, but every time I deviated away...it just didn't feel right." So she followed her heart, and started Lipstick Queen, a new line composed of ten shades in two textures—and judging by the lip-smacking results, the Australian native finally realized her dream of making lipstick feel relevant again.
Never one for resting on her laurels, King recently released a book about her path to entrepreneurial success, Lessons of a Lipstick Queen, and two new product ranges: the super subtle Oxymoron Matte Gloss (which comes in four shades) and the '70s inspired Shine Hard Core Gloss (which comes in six shades). It's no wonder that this lipstick mogul's mark is all over every fashion maven's perfectly made-up pout—including Gen Art's very own Lee Trimble!
