A Neutral Canvas

Mischa Barton fell hard for this Sydney-based label, and so will you!

Sometimes simple is a great thing. Take the work of emerging designer Kirrily Johnston, for example. Her playful collection of ready-to-wear for Summer 2008 ranges from bathing suits to evening-ready frocks in clean, tailored cuts, and bold, juicy hues that really pop; ladylike silhouettes are easy and wearable, but still give off subtle sex appeal. Consider her modern pieces the perfect foundation garment for putting together a flawless summer ensemble—and check out three of our own attempts at playing dress up below.

1. a day at the beach
Spice up this basic maillot suit with some snake-embossed metallic-leather gladiator sandals and a pair of high-waisted black cotton shorts from our fashion program alumni, Staerk.

2. brunch with the girls
Take your slouchy, mango-colored tunic dress to the next level with wingtip-inspired black cutout sandals from LD Tuttle and a studded lucky horseshoe charm necklace.

3. swanky cocktails with the bf
You're sure to shine in this polished pewter mini dress; add some sparkly danglers from Dirty Librarian Chains and a fierce pair of distressed metallic-leather sandals to complete the effect.
