Don't Worry, Be Happy
Ben Folds + the end of the world + :) = Jukebox the Ghost
When you're listening to Jukebox the Ghost, you just feel like it's going to be a good day. This Washington D.C. indie pop trio, who formed as undergrads at George Washington University, plays piano-driven tunes with sweet, quirky lyrics that make you smile—which is pretty ironic when you consider the fact that Let Live and Let Ghosts, their debut full-length, is all about the Armageddon. Bygones. Below, my hard-hitting interview with the carefree candy-coated threesome who are set to play New York tomorrow night!
You're all cute. Did being in a band help you woo girls back in college?
I don't think it has ever helped us woo anyone—probably done more damage than good, really. But we have definitely met more girls than we would have otherwise...
What was the first song that you learned that made you feel cool?
Actually...I did a piano piece for 4 hands (two people, or four one-handed people) at a piano camp the summer before my sophomore year of high school. We wore sunglasses while we played during a very formal recital, and I think technically that was cool.
You make happy music. Do you consider yourselves optimists?
Undoubtedly so, optimistic to an unhealthy degree. Though we seriously doubt the optimism will last.
If the cup is half full, what do you hope is in it?
Jesse (drums): Beer
Tommy (guitar): Not milk
Ben (piano): Breakfast
Word is that fans go wild at your shows. Zaniest thing one has done?
Come to a show more than once...Actually, while this isn't a "one crazy fan" moment, our zaniest live moment was when we invited all of the fans in the front few rows of the Black Cat in D.C. to join us up on stage for our last song. When we next played the Black Cat, the venue was strewn with signs saying "stay off the stage".
Jukebox the Ghost plays the Blender Theater with the Wombats tomorrow night at 8 p.m.; grab your tickets here. We're also giving away a pair of tix to their Union Hall show on 6/20; email us to enter!
