Arty Date Night?
New must-see gallery shows for every point in your relationship.
Planning a romantic excursion around an art exhibit can prove a challenge, even for the most established culture vulture, but when done right, nothing makes for a more fabulous date. With that in mind I've done the busywork of scanning the gallery listings for you; below, my picks for five shows that will knock his socks off—whether you're meeting for the first time or showing him the door. Now all you have to do is find something cute to wear!
1. For a first date: James Mollison, "The Disciples & James and Other Apes" @ Hasted Hunt Gallery
In my experience, nothing shakes the awkwardness of getting to know someone new quite like making fun of other people; this British photographer's striking series of real-life groupies shot at concerts for their favorite acts—a line-up as diverse as Dolly Parton and Marilyn Manson—should do the trick.
Post-art drinks: The Rusty Knot
2. For a third date: Natsuki Uruma @ Rivington Arms
Nothing says, "It's sexytime!" quite like images of people er, well, having sex. Be sure to check out "Stones," one of the prints from this London-based Japanese artist—it just might be the visual equivalent of turning on some sensual Barry White.
Post-art drinks: Jack's Luxury Oyster Bar
3. A few months in: Matthew Brannon, "The Question Is The Compliment." @ Friedrich Petzel Gallery
By now, you're starting to get comfortable and really open up around one another. These new sculptures and prints use objects like shoes and sushi to represent and explore the most private secrets and desires of successful young urbanites. Consider them a jumping off point.
Post-art drinks: The Half-King
4. Your one-year anniversary: Too Strong To Stop, Too Sweet To Lose @ Cohan and Leslie
The lovely Willa Cather quote that inspired the works in this group show of three emerging artists—Juergen Drescher, Melanie Schiff, and Mark Soo—will give you the warm fuzzies; not that you two lovebirds need help in that department if you've made it this far.
Post-art drinks: Tia Pol
5. A break up: JACK*%SS @ Susan Inglett Gallery
It seems only fitting to break bad news with the appropriate backdrop; methinks this exhibition of stunt-based film and video pieces provides the perfect setting for pouring on a little emotional pain.
Post-art drinks: Red Rock West
