Even if you don't know him by name, if you're a 20-something then you probably know Sam Beam's haunting whisper of a voice; as the man behind Iron & Wine, this singer/songwriter's folksy The Postal Service cover was one of the best parts of the much-lauded Garden State soundtrack. And when an album is chock full of music that will change your life, that's saying something.

In a stylistic a departure from the bare bones man-and-his-guitar efforts that originally caught Zach Braff's lo-fi loving ear, this past fall he released a new album called The Shepherd's Dog, with a little back up help from a fleshed-out band. "I wanted to make a bit more complex record," Beam has explained. "I also knew I wanted to bring some other people in to do stuff that I couldn't do." But don't go thinking he has strayed too far from his delightfully simple roots: "The seeds of the song are still just me, the guitar, and a notebook."
