Saddle Up, Cowgirls
A quirky-cool crop of handbags emerges from NZ (and heads straight into your wardrobe, we betcha).
A handbag is a most difficult purchase. After all, you want a fine quality bag that performs its duty without totally breaking your bank. You want a bag you can clutch comfortably on the daily grind. You want a bag that complements your quirky style while eschewing fleeting trends and gimmicks. Oh, and it should possess enough versatility to match your entire wardrobe. Luckily, a Deadly Ponies bag never misses a beat, exceeding even the loftiest of handbag expectations.
Though design duo Liam Bowden and Katie Smithwho met as students after sharing a love of sculptural arts 'n craftslaunched Deadly Ponies only two years ago, they don't appear to be novices to conceptual design and workmanship in the least. "Knotted Mind," their current spring collection which extends to include an eclectic range of jewelry, belts and wallets, shows the designers drawing from their usual assorted influences: enchanted forests, forgotten childhoods, trees, animals, leather, and Victorian and Gothic elements. Pieces possess a raw blend of edgy street style and classic functionality, ranging from slouchy suede to structured leather, petite clutches to large satchels, adorned with subtle brass hardware detailing that is often removable.
Not to mention, the kookiest of names: "It makes them fun and much less serious. We think there are enough people making serious things." Take, for example, Mr. Acrobat, a red double shoulder bag that can be worn extended or neatly fold in half; Mr. Foldbackabit, a black leather shoulder bag whose neon yellow interior is exposed when the top isyou guessed itfolded back a bit; and total stunner, Mr. Stuffintye: a casual, slouchy suede tote with a roomy interior and neon straps made of rope.
Though, it's hard to pick a favorite when every piece from DP is that good. Which works out, because when you get sick of hearing "Where'd you get that bag?", you can just go buy another...
