Pretty In... Green?
A 16-piece debut collection that would have driven Duckie wild.
Weldon Layne: Preppy heartthrob in a John Hughes flick or a fresh and simple new line you'll be wearing this spring?
Take a guess. Designers Torie Greenberg and Claire Smith are still students, but their line is more than elementary. The design duo (Parsons class of 2009) fused their middle names and collective experience at Libertine, Vogue and Jill Stuart to create an unfussy collection of separates and dresses that is equal parts sexy and refined, just like it sounds. Trying to hook the richest kid in town? A silver silk camisole and skirt in sherry will totally impress his parents over lunch. When the pressures of inter-income dating are too much to handle your tearful break-up will be ever so stylish in a silk jersey skirt and the "Andy" trench. Coincidence? Perhaps.
Weldon Layne has taken a refreshing approach to neutrals by mixing colors that defy the rules of style for some. Project Runway judge Michael Kors recently referred to this family of hues as "Brady Bunch colors" but nevertheemind ladies, this may be my favorite palette for spring. Saffron and Silver meet my new friends, beige and rust. Add linen, lace and tulle carefully sourced from Ireland, France and England respectively and you have a worldly young American line.
Weldon Layne's updated classics are chic, light and knock preppy on its posterior. No one will ever know you came from the other side of the tracks.
