That Sao Paulo Wow Factor

A line out of Brazil has a subtle cool that screams hot child, summer in the city.

Leave it to a well-established Brazilian label to create some of the most perfect clothes for summer this season. Osklen, known for a laid-back, surf-inspired aesthetic, was born when founder Oskar Metsavaht, a doctor at the time, needed a warm coat for a climbing expedition in the Andes. Using his knowledge of the human body he designed his first piece, and within two years, he had created an entire collection of sportswear.

Two decades later "United Kingdom of Ipanema", his new collection for Spring/Summer 2008, blends the same mix of opposites—such as raw nature (inspired by global travel) and cosmopolitan sophistication—that has made the line a hit among fashionistas worldwide. A floor-length gauzy gown in an explosive rainbow of color is countered by a demure pleated shift dress in gray. A sea foam cotton tank with button detailing is an edgy complement to well-cut linen pants. There are even a few items in black for pale hipsters who crave pieces with more edge, less sunshine.

"Since I don't consider myself a fashion designer, my first step is not sketching," Metsavaht explains. "I come up with a scene, a story, a lifestyle concept, inspired from an experience I had emotionally, physically or mentally... [then] I do my own short movies, where I have the chance to share the scene I've imagined before designing the collection. These pieces are designed to be the costumes of my 'film'."

So, are you ready for your close up?

Osklen is located at 97 Wooster Street, (212) 219-8250.
