Mother Plucker
Meet Rolling Stone magazine's first and only female "Guitar God."
When I watch Georgia-born guitar hero Kaki King in her music video, "Playing With Pink Noise," all I can think is that she belongs in the next iPod commercial. There's something quirky, vulnerable and throughly modern about this young talent. Something about her just screams Apple.
If you haven't heard of her before, no worriesyou've probably heard her before. Her insane guitar skills were featured on Canadian indie pop duo Tegan and Sara's most recent album, The Con, and she's cameoed on recordings with bands like Northern State and The Foo Fighters. (When she joined them on stage in London, Dave Grohl told the crowd, "There are some guitar players that are good and there are some guitar players that are really f*cking good. And then there's Kaki King.") She's also dabbled in film, contributing two songs to the critically-acclaimed "Into the Wild" soundtrack and playing Freddie Highmore's hands in last year's feel good darling, "August Rush."
And somehow, in the midst of all this tapping about, King found time to record her fourth album, Dreaming of Revenge, which drops tomorrow. Does she feel added pressure now that there's so much buzz around her name? "I'm having to fight to steer people back toward my music," she has said. "I only hope that these major projects make new people want to hear the record."
Preview two of the tracks now on her MySpace page and mark your calendars for March 26th, when she'll be playing live at The Roxygrab your tickets here!
