Glam Rocks
Luxe bijoux fit for glamorous rock stars... and their groupies!
Good man jewelry can be hard to find. So much so that for spring, we're turning our eyes all the way across the pond, where emerging designer Hannah Martin is redefining the concept of bling for boys and girls.
How did this Central Saint Martins graduate, who has recently been asked to consult for fashion powerhouses Givenchy and Cartier, first get her start? A few years back Martin was living in Paris, designing fine jewelry by day and hanging out with her friends in grimy rocker bars a night. Suddenly a light bulb went off, and she decided to combine the two disparate parts of her life by launching her own line... and somewhere, David Bowie smiled.
The London native says she designs for "the fierce and the glamorous," and her latest collection of edgy, chunky rings and necklaces, fittingly titled "It's Only Rock 'N Roll," doesn't disappoint. Inspired by the hedonism, raw masculinity and powerful sexuality of rock icons, these punky, precious pieces are going to drive both sexes totally mad. "Blurring genders excites me," Martin has said. "It's like wearing a guy's shirt the morning after you've spent the night."
Like all great artists, Martin can't wait to get cracking on what's next: "One of my favorite parts of what I do is the very beginning of a new collection, where an entire world is open to me. I build a muse, like a beautiful Frankenstein's monster, out of bits of everyone and everything that moves me... until he is so vivid in my mind that I know exactly what jewelry he would covet and what would turn him on."
A carefully-calculating womanno wonder her pieces are so hard to resist!
Hannah Martin is available at Kaviar and Kind, 8533 West Sunset Boulevard, ((310) 659-8857.
