Band to Know: Neon Neon
Don't put away your off-the-shoulder shirt and skinny jeans just yetNeon Neon is about to take over the dance floor.
A cool new side project involving a British artist who made a name playing pop back in the '90s. No, we're not talking about Gorillaz. The latest nod to '80s nostalgia, and the band currently taking over my iPod, Neon Neon, is a collaboration between Super Furry Animals frontman, Gruff Rhys, and an electronic/hip-hop producer known as Boom Bip (I kid you not).
With synth-tastic, hook heavy songs that reference everything from Raquel Welch to Princess Leia and guest talent that includes heavyweights like Spank Rock, Yo Majesty and Fabrizio Moretti, the duo is making waves with their energetic debut, Stainless Style. The inspiration for the concept album? John DeLorean, the American engineer who created Marty McFly's signature vehicle before his life took a downward turn thanks to drug abuse and bankruptcy.
"It's been a real pleasure to write about a specific subject, and to think about various scenarios relating to his life and imaginary scenarios that may have happened to him on the way," Rhys has said. "And so musically we've been writing in a style that personally mirrored his kind of fast, cocktail-driven lifestyle. It's safe to say that it's unlike anything myself or Boom Bip has ever done before... It's a very frivolous electro-pop record about the first playboy engineer!"
Let's dance.
