Little Voice
She sings songs about love, digs old Westerns and drinks whiskey, straight up, no ice. How could you not be mad about Keren Ann?
If that act of falling in love had a universal soundtrack, I think Paris-based chanteuse Keren Ann would make the cut. Why? She makes dreamy mood music, babysomething that she's referred to in the past as "painting in sound."
No newcomer to the game, Keren Ann self-produced her fifth, and most recent album, which came out to positive buzz last summer. Sleepy, sultry folk tracks like "Liberty" are balanced out with edgier, Velvet Underground-inspired numbers like "Lay Your Head Down" (listen to both on her MySpace page). "With this album there was something very open, very luminous," this singer/songwriter has said. "I guess that's the right wordbecause I recorded the vocals in a very big room and with natural echo and reverb. Especially with a voice like mine that is tiny and doesn't have much power, every slight emotion can be felt if you're in a big room."
Emotion you can hear firsthand when Keren Ann (and her freshly cropped hair, which quite honestly, makes me kind of sad) plays Yoshi's with former Luna members, Dean & Britta, next Monday, February 18th. Grab your tickets here.
Yoshi's is located at 1330 Fillmore Street, (415) 655-5600.
