This Old Bag
Vancouver-based designer Ashley Watson is saving the earth, one slouchy hobo at a time.
The other day one of my friends asked where she could find a new carry-all that was cute, but wouldn't cost a fortune. If I only I'd known about Canadian accessories designer Ashley Watson, I could have hooked her up with an adorable bag and done something green for the planet.
Inspired by pieces purchased from charity thrift stores, this former Libertine intern handcrafts one-of-a-kind leather products using exclusively recycled material. Translation? That perfectly worn-in looking hobo on your arm might have been some rebel without a cause's motorcycle jacket back in the day. Suddenly old feels incredibly new. "I remember being in art school and creating so much stuff, just for my own creative exploration, that I threw away," she has said. "I really like that I'm starting with something that already exists; it makes me feel like I am not contributing to how much waste there is."
Among my favorites for spring: The Large Murre in Gold has a decidedly downtown look, but is big enough to hold all of your stuff for the office; the Small Plover in Cream is perfect for transitioning from day to evening, and has girl-on-the-go friendly dual pockets in the front; the Thrush in Red is delightfully slouchy and soft, with funky seams and cool rouching details.
There's something about an eco-chic bag with a past...especially when nabbing one means you're doing something good for the future!
Bags by Ashley Watson are available at Treehouse Green Gifts, 2935 College Avenue, (510) 204-9292.
