Downtown Duds

Soft, live-in-'em basics with a fresh, fashion twist—girls and guys across America rejoice!

New York-based designer Chrissie Miller is the kind of girl you want to make your best friend. And her new line, SOPHOMORE, is filled with the kind of clothes you would normally steal from your BFF's closet.—easy, breezy sportswear that channels the vibe of the Lower East Side back in the '70s...think Chloe Sevigny.

"The style back then, and in the Lower East Side of today, looks almost the same to me," Miller explains. "I like the idea of a timeless, classic look; the perfect jeans, a worn out t-shirt, a zippered hoodie—the kind of stuff that never gets old." For her Cass Bird-shot look book for spring (which features everyone from Cory Kennedy to Bijou Phillips to The Virgins!), she created a story to match these hipster classics perfectly.

"When Cass and I met it was an instant connection," Miller says. "We even brought the same images for inspiration! We talked a lot about the feel we wanted it to have, and we went to a bunch of different locations until we found the right one under the Williamsburg Bridge in this semi-abandoned park. It's all about these New York street kids who hang out all day and stay up all night running around the city making trouble. That's the way my teens years were spent in the city!"

Miller's favorite shot out of the bunch? "There's one of Bijou and my friend Jen Brill flashing cars on the highway below. It's just so iconic. It looks like a photo that you have seen before, but still feels very contemporary." Just like her line.

SOPHOMORE's spring collection will be available online here starting next month.
