Hello, Lover

What started off in a market stall in Sydney is now one of the biggest brands in Australia.

"Electric Ladyland," the latest collection from one of our favorite cult labels from down under, Lover, is dedicated to all of the "female punk poet pioneers"—lovely ladies like Marianne Faithfull, Patti Smith, the Slits, Poly Styrene and Chrissie Hynde. But don't be fooled. These aren't the kind of clothes you necessarily want to mosh in at Empty Bottle.

Susien Chong and Nic Briand, the creative couple behind the line, describe themselves as "same album, different songs." With Lover, they weave together their romantic and rock 'n roll aesthetics to create a look that is quirky yet totally pretty and feminine—kind of like loyal fans who include Joanna Newsom, Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams.

"We started the label based on what we loved and admired, in turn we've created our own world with a mix and match of our favorite heroes, muses, films and songs," they explain on their Web site. "We've found Lover ladies all over the world who share a similar vision who have reinterpreted the garments in their way, and for us that's perfect."

Stand outs for spring? The Ginsberg Double Breasted Blazer has a prep punk vibe that is schoolgirl chic without coming off as too precious; the Tuxedo Dress is sleek and polished, with just the right hint of hipster sass; the Natalia dress has an easy silhouette that playfully conjures up images of the swinging '60s—while glossing over any winter weight gain.

Go ahead, become a groupie, mate. Spring is for Lover.

Lover is available at Hejfina, 1529 N Milwaukee Avenue, (773) 772-0002.
