What Up, Wynwood?

Art that's all about the awkwardness of just trying to fit in...yeah, we can all identify with that.

Susan Lee-Chun is a Korean-American performance-based artist trying to make a living in Latino-dominated city where she's kind of an outsider. Anthony Spinello is a 24-year-old art world upstart who decided to move his gallery space from his second-floor apartment to a space in the heart of the Wynwood Art District. He's also Susan's dealer.

Which would explain why he chose "Versus," Lee-Chun's highly-anticipated debut solo show, as the first exhibition for his new space. Her work, which incorporates performance, video, photography and installations, speaks to issues of race and identity with a tongue in cheek brand of humor that keeps meaty issues light-hearted; because of his age, Lee-Chun feels like Spinello is able to understand the cultural reference points—and find the funny—in her joyfully-manipulated self portraits.

Lucy and Desi. Bonnie and Clyde. Lee-Chun and Spinello. They're kind of like the Dream Team of the emerging art world; catch this inaugural show now, before it closes on October 6th!

See "Versus" at the Spinello Gallery, 2294 NW Second Avenue, (786) 271-4223.
