Acting Kinda Shady

Ever wish you could look out at the Golden Gate? Or that lived on an Italian vineyard? Now you can have a room with a view without moving an inch!

As an accessories designer, she's changed the way we view the world with her Pop-Out pendants and expanding jewelry. Now Houston-based talent Melissa Borrell is taking her quest one step farther, expanding her work into the interior design realm and invading our homes to completely alter what we see when we look out the window.

How so? With handmade Fantasy Shades which feature shadow images of the myriad places she's lived over the years; we're talking everything from Roman umbrella trees to the Golden Gate Bridge to downtown Manhattan. If your idea of a "fantasy" happens to be something different, you can also custom-order nylon mesh shades in any size silk-screened with the design of your choice.

Sometimes we all feel the need to get away; now you can create an entire dream world by simply drawing the shades...which beats the hell out of staring blankly at an air shaft. (She also has a line of delicate shadow bulbs, hand-etched with some of the same patterns that you find in her jewelry, in case it gets a little too dark for you!)

Melissa's work is available locally at the San Francisco MoMA, or online at Melissa Borrell Design.
