Pattern Perfect
Lilies, legs and layers make their debut in a local artist's flea market-chic prints.
Some people layer their clothes. San Francisco talent Jen Oaks layers her prints. The artist has an affinity for mixing edgy, contemporary subjects with vintage patternslike this punky woman in orange headphones set against a backdrop that could be your grandma's dining room wallpaper. Aiming for an organic effect, she scans old book pages, sheet music and gessoed wood, and paints on top using Photoshop...she's a 21st-century Rauschenberg, with feminine sensibilities.
Inspired by textiles, fashion, vintage finds and botanicals, eye-catching patterns and subjects vie for dominance in her giclee prints; you'll find paisley stockings and damask-printed cakes competing against more conventional white kitties and birds in flight. Two works that we've got to have: "Fabulous Skirt", a playful piece in which a woman's crocus-print skirt blooms into a massive purple flower bed, and the more self-explanatory, and totally adorable, "Jeff Tweedy of Wilco".
For those with tastes for the tiny, Lilliputian-size prints of Oaks' artwork are available at her Etsy site at a mere $5 a pop. Want to spice up your walls with a full-size giclee print of your own? Mention the code "OAKSGENART" when you shop her online store, and you'll receive a 20 percent discount off your purchase!
