Listen Up: New York

Music Nation artist spotlight on...Theo and the Skyscrapers!

Theo Kogan's name has been on the lips of in-the-know scenesters for years. Why? She has done time as a model and an actress, nabbing small roles in films such as Bringing out the Dead, Rock Star and Zoolander. But, more notably, she released six albums with her former group the Lunachicks, an arty punk band with a dedicated following that remains a staple in the downtown music world.

Now, she's back in a new musical incarnation, Theo and the Skyscrapers, and her sights are set on stardom again. The band is a new-wave modern punk group with an arty edge; they might remind you of fellow New Yorkers, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, rich with synth-y guitars and Theo's Debbie Harry-esque vocals.

Read on for our exclusive interview with the lovely Miss Kogan and check out her video for "Broken Girl" on Music Nation, an online video-based music contest for the best unsigned artists in rock, now. If you like what you see, you can catch the band when they play the Knitting Factory, this Saturday night at 8:30 p.m.!

Whose career do you aspire to?
We try to aim somewhere between The Cramps and Cher.

What film or music video are you inspired by?
Renowned New York artist Rob Roth completely inspires us. Rob has shot all the videos and we worked with him on Screen Test. More information on that can be found on his Web site.

What do you want your music/visuals to say about you and your music?
We want our music to heighten the experience of the listener. To confuse or inspire. To make one remember a dream or nightmare by simply listening to our tracks.

Theo and the Skyscrapers, 8/11 @ Knitting Factory, 8:30 p.m.
