Some Seriously Fierce Beauty
An new collection of jewels gives a dark salute to birds and beasts alike!
You can take the boy out of Maine, but you can't take the nature out of the boy. Or at least that's what we thought after checking out Flight or Fight, the most recent collection from Brooklyn-based accessories line Digby & Iona.
Aaron Ruff, the 20-something talent behind the designs has created a bevy of baubles that put a playful spin on the hackneyed phrase. Delicate sparrows, rich with details, languish on swings inside pendant cages; fighting cockerels clutch rubies and topaz in their claws; knives and hares dangle from shared chains in humorous juxtaposition. His work is smart, beautiful and visually surprising.
"I wanted it to have a higher level of detail and be more precious and delicate than my last collection," Aaron told Pulse. "I also wanted to expand on the idea that each piece should have a little story attached to it that it the wearer could respond to; the cages are a good example, because each one is like a miniature wearable diorama."
Because he's so darn cool, Aaron is giving Pulse readers the chance to one of his cage necklaces, like the one pictured above. To enter, email us the name that Maya Angelou (who knows a thing or two about caged birds) went by as a little girl. Good luck!
Digby & Iona is available at Bblessing, 181 Orchard Street, (212) 378-8005; and online at Catbird NYC.
