Chicago Film Fest Short: Patterns 3

The flick: Patterns 3
Michael and Pauline's relationship trouble evolves into a beautifully crafted, abstract look at the most complicated and simple state of being...true love.

The director: Jamie Travis
Jamie's short films have been shown consistently at the Toronto International Film Festival and his work often compared to David Lynch and Alfred Hitchcock. We screened another of his shorts, The Saddest Boy In the World, early this year at our New York film festival.

What movie character would you go out for a drink with? Why?
"Sharon McKendrick" and "Susan Evers" i.e., Hayley Mills and Hayley Mills from The Parent Trap. Sure, they are underage, but I would love to remind them that what their parents did to them—to separate them when they were babies and hide their existence from each other—is pretty much despicable. The Parent Trap is a delightful romp, yes. But I have always imagined a darker version, one in which getting the parents back together does not represent the return to form of the perfect family but rather some sort of sick revenge. I would want to discuss this with Sharon and Susan. Plus, they could clearly pick up the tab, Sharon with her swishy Boston pad and Susan with her Californian ranch-lifestyle.

What historical time period would you visit and adapt into a film?
1967. I have long been obsessed with Rosemary's Baby and have recently been toying with the idea of a fictionalized look behind the scenes. The apartment! The fashions! Vidal Sassoon! How could you not want to visit 1967?

What surprised you the most about making your film?
That you need a nearly impossible quantity of paper airplanes to make a room look full of them. Originally, I wanted Pauline to be wading up to her waist in paper airplanes. After a few days of watching the angry crew fold paper airplanes during their off-time, it became apparent that instead of a pile of planes, there would be a mere patina. Still, it worked out for the best.
