Chicago Film Fest: Numb
The flick: Numb
After one particularly intense bong-hit, screenwriter Hudson Milbank (a humorously neurotic Matthew Perry) falls into an unshakable depression, ultimately diagnosing himself with "depersonalization disorder"the sense that everything is unreal, dreamlike and "hellish." Desperate to feel like himself again, he seeks out every traditional and alternative therapy imaginable. Unsuccessfully running the Los Angeles shrink gauntlet and even self-medicating with a healthy dose of the Golf Channel, he plummets further into the depths of despair.
Hudson's writing partner (Kevin Pollak) increasingly fears they'll never work again. But like every crazy-boy meets sexy-girl story, things change early-on when Hudson meets Sara (Lynn Collins) at a movie pitch, whose relaxed ways and big-hearted spirit provide tangible incentive for his race to recovery. Numb is a delightfully-executed dramedy that lightly explores human emotion and ultimately, the strength in each of us.
The director: Harris Goldberg
Harris sold his first screenplay to National Lampoon, and two days later became a client of a major agency, his next screenplay garnering a four picture deal at Disney. Some of Harris's films include: Deuce Bigalow:Male Gigolo, I'll Be Home For Christmas, The Master Of Disguise and Without A Paddle. (None of which he paid to see). He went on to direct Where's Angelo starring Michael Madsen, Beverely D'Angelo and Robert Forster and realized that working with "people" on "sets" in the "real world" was more fun and satisfying than sitting in front of a laptop all day. The autobiographical Numb, is his directorial feature debut, and it recently premiered at The Tribeca Film Festival to four sold out shows.
