Chicago Film Fest: Suffering Man's...

The flick: Suffering Man's Charity
When handsome Sebastian St. Germain (David Boreanaz) enters the life of John Vandermark (Alan Cumming) claiming to be a novelist down on his luck, he is welcomed with open arms. But when Vandermark grows bitter, feeling his hospitality has been abused, he is forced to confront the smarmy Sebastian. What ensues is a vindictive and farcically dark tale, offering a fresh twist on the hustler/john power dynamic.

The director: Alan Cumming
Alan was born on January 27, 1965, in Aberfeldy, Scotland. He wrote, directed, produced and acted in The Anniversary Party (2001) with Jennifer Jason Leigh, which premiered at the Cannes Film festival in 2002 and went on to win a National Board of Review award and two Independent Spirit award nominations. More recently he has produced the documentary Show People (2004), the films Sweet Land (2005) and Full Grown Men (2006) (he appears in both) and acted in the movies Grey Matters (2005) opposite Heather Graham and Bam Bam and Celeste (2005) opposite Margaret Cho.

What movie character would you go out for a drink with? Why?
Auntie Mame, because life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death.

What historical time period would you visit and adapt into a film?
I'd love to do something about bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Rebellion in Scotland in 1745. It's such a passionate and romantic time in my country's history, and, at the same time, Charlie was an effete French brat who couldn't bear stomping around the freezing cold hillsides and hiding from the English. I love how great moments of history are so misrepresented. Rather scarily, it seems to be happening more and more in present, too!

What surprised you the most about making your film?
That I got away with it.
