Pulse recently caught up with Tay to quiz her on her latest inspirations.
How did you come up with the name Snoozer Loser?
I used to jot down phrases that popped into my head in my sketchbook, and "snoozerloser" was one of them. It was during my design school years, and I was really sleep deprived. I thought it reflected the type of girl that would wear my linefun, silly, appreciative of details, loves color and doesn't take themselves too seriously.
How did you get into fashion?
My mother was a great artist and a total clotheshorse. I remember running around as a kid, wearing her dresses and odd outfits I'd put together. I eventually went to study fashion design at Parsons.
What was the inspiration behind this season's line?
For this season I was really inspired by Louis Malle's film, Pretty Baby, and did a lot of research on textiles of the era. The local library in my hometown is a rad reference for material. They still use a card catalog!
You did many of the prints by handhow do you come up with designs?
Through music. I was listening a lot to the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd. My friend Robin introduced me to This American Life, so I was listening to a lot of that. I was also inspired by wandering the woods last summer, vintage wallpaper, The Discovery Channel, the little shops in New England and photos of my mother wearing her handmade clothes in the '50s and '60s.
What is your most popular item in the new line?
The Amy Grace. It has a great fit and can be worn as a dress or a long top. It's made out of hand-printed silk and a silhouette of Sitting Bull.
