Behind the Line: Sovereign Beck
Will Beck and Ryan Sovereign of Sovereign Beck, a contemporary line of ties, premiere their second collection in New York tonight from 7 to 10 p.m. at Tact Studio (900 Broadway, Suite 905). Their designs are youthful and thoughtful, but most importantly, make a fun, stylish statement. Pulse caught up with the duo to get the inside scoop on how these Rhode Island School of Design grads got their start and what they're up to next.
What is it about ties that you find so compelling?
Will: I don't think of the tie as the businessman's noose or whatever. I think of it as a classy addition to one's outfit. I enjoy dressing up a bit for a night out, and I think a sharp tie can really top it off. This is an area that ties are not generally created for, and I think that is what we would like ours to be.
Ryan: We thought there was an opportunity to create something that didn't exist...in an area of fashion that needed excitement.
How do your 2007 designs differ from your previous work?
Will: I think this collection is a little "classier" but still falls well outside the basic tie. We really wanted to up the ante.
Ryan: We wanted each tie to tell a story, which is maybe only apparent to us...like the story of the renegade thread going against the grain or the Mosaic city floating over a ground of stripes. We also considered color a lot more, and in certain cases, took greater advantage of the silk's properties.
What was the inspiration behind this second collection?
Will: I don't think there is a central inspiration. We are always looking at old ties and various old textiles from the 1900's through the '80s. Our brains just mush it all together and out pops the designs.
Ryan: Each ties has its own inspiration, I think. Op art, nature, traditional prints twisted, string.
What do you each bring to the table when it comes to designing?
Will: I bring the wine.
Ryan: Plates and silverware!
If you live in the New York-area, come sip fancy cocktails and check out their second collection tonight!
